In 2023, the vinyl record has been chosen as this year's Second Hand Christmas gift, an award that Myrorna, one of Sweden's largest non-profit associations, stands behind. SEK 80 billion is the annual turnover of the Swedish Christmas trade, the majority of which is spent on newly produced products, which causes many to ask themselves the question, how can one contribute to a more climate-smart Christmas?
In the Sustainable Christmas survey, 1,000 people were asked about their attitude to both receiving and buying second-hand Christmas presents, as well as what people would most like to give as a Christmas present. According to the survey, 6/10 say that they are happy to receive used products as a Christmas present and 7/10 say that they want to give away second-hand Christmas presents. The most positive about secondhand Christmas gifts are people aged 30-49 years and they express the benefits as many; better for the environment, kinder to the wallet, appreciated to receive, it becomes personal and you contribute.
The vinyl record, this year's second-hand Christmas present
In the 2023 vote, the Swedish people have chosen the vinyl record as the winner and as this year's Christmas present, second hand. In addition to the superior sound quality that a vinyl record provides, a vinyl record contributes to a stronger feeling that makes the music bring so much more joy.
How is it that the vinyl record has now become so popular again?
In an age when music is increasingly available in digital form, it is surprising to see vinyl records rise in popularity and sales volume. However, it is not a coincidence. The superior sound quality of vinyl records, with their natural sound reproduction, analog waves, dynamic range and characteristic "vinyl feel", offers a unique and enchanting experience that cannot be duplicated by digital formats. It is a time travel to the golden age of music, an experience that enriches our senses and deepens our connection to music.
Is modern music released on vinyl? Or is it only old music that is available on vinyl?
When the CD arrived in the early 90s, sales of vinyl died completely and few thought they would see its comeback. Since then, music media has been revolutionized both once and twice, to now return to the roots. In the US, in 2022, as much new music was sold on vinyl as it was in the mid-80s, a time when the CD or digital music was not available. Most of today's artists, from Taylor Swift to Jay Z, therefore choose to release their music on vinyl.
