Tilaye's Saxophone with The Dahlak Band
Tilaye Gebre is one of the most influential saxophonists in Ethiopian music history. During the creative explosion in Addis Ababa in the 1970s, he was at the center as a musician, arranger and bandleader. As a member of legendary groups such as Dahlak Band, Walias Band, Equators and later through collaborations with giants such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessesse and Aster Aweke, he shaped the sound that came to define modern Ethiopian music.
With roots in the Ethiopian National Theatre, Tilaye developed a unique ability to blend traditional Ethiopian melodies with soul, funk, jazz and psychedelic elements early on. During difficult political times, he continued to create music that lit up Addis Ababa's nightlife — often recorded live, raw and direct.
He later took his music to the world, touring the US and Europe and playing venues such as Carnegie Hall. With a career spanning six decades, Tilaye Gebre is a living legend — and a central figure in the sound that is now being rediscovered by crate diggers and vinyl lovers the world over.
